The Contrasting Instructions assignment asked us to write two sets of instructions for two different audiences for the same task. The variety in audience knowledge, experience, etc. forced us as writers to tweak our writing style and presentation in order to fit the needs of each audience.

For my piece, I wrote two sets of instructions on how to test and treat swimming pool water. My first audience was the common pool owner who has decided to test and treat their pool on their own with what they have at home. This audience is relatively inexperienced, with little knowledge of complex pool care and its corresponding terminology. In order to cater to these needs, I made sure to use relatively simple terminology and detailed steps to avoid confusion.

My second audience was the service staff of the pool company. The instructions served as more of a checklist for them rather than a how-to guide, as the service technicians are familiar with advanced pool care and practices. For this set of instructions, I was able to use more complicated terms without having to explain them in extended detail.
