Services

CAPP aims to offer a series of partnerships to leverage student expertise and meet instructor needs. Our current partnerships are outlined below they include opportunities for component review, observations, feedback sessions and class video recording. See below for further details, and contact us if you have an idea for a partnership beyond our current offering.

Component Reviewer. An instructor can request a student consultant for specific guidance of any aspect of their course (e.g., accessibility of Canvas course, clarity of assignment sheets, achievement of pedagogical goals, diversity of content on a syllabus, etc.) Process: 

  • Instructor submits materials & meeting availability via our request form.
  • Student consultant and instructor meet to discuss instructor goals & materials.
  • Student consultant reviews materials based on instructor goals. 
  • Student consultant prepares feedback report for instructor. 
  • Student consultant meets with instructor to discuss feedback and achievement of pedagogical goals. 

Observations. A student consultant is paired with an instructor for four weeks of weekly observations. The student consultant records “in writing” what went on in the classroom and shares the record with the instructor. A four-week commitment is required to hold instructors accountable for achieving their goals. This offering will follow the format below:

  • Instructor requests partnership & submits meeting availability via our request form.  
  • The student consultant meets with the instructor prior to each class to discuss the instructor’s goals for the partnership.  
  • Instructors can request simply an observation, or The instructor can propose something specific for the student consultant to look for: Which parts of the class seemed most engaging to students? How would you describe the classroom climate? 
  • The student consultant observes the instructor’s course. 
  • The student consultant creates a report detailing their observations. 
  • The student consultant meets with the instructor to discuss their observations and potential suggestions for changes. 

Mid- or End-of-Semester Feedback Session. Student consultants visit the course for the last 15-20 minutes to conduct a feedback session with the students. 

  • Instructor requests partnership & submits meeting availability via our request form.
  • Student consultant and instructor meet to discuss the course and instructor goals.
  • Student consultant invites students in course to complete a guided, written reflection regarding their experience in the course.
  • Students respond to an online survey asking questions such as: 
    • What helps your learning in this course?
    • What hinders your learning in this course?
    • What suggestions do you have? 
  • Student Consultant facilitates brief discussion based on student responses/feedback. 
  • Student Consultant creates a report for the instructor. 
  • Student Consultant and Instructor meet to discuss feedback and brainstorm changes to course as needed. 

Class Video Recording. The student consultant makes arrangements for the course to be video recorded and ensures delivery of digital recording. The instructor may invite the student consultant to review the video and discuss their observations, or there may be an opportunity for a focus group to be conducted with students and/or faculty, depending on the faculty member’s interests and goals. 

  • Instructor requests partnership & submits meeting availability (if necessary) via our request form.
  • [If requested] Student consultant and instructor meet to discuss the course and instructor goals.
  • Student Consultant arranges video recording of instructors class and facilitates delivery of recording.
    • Student does not review view unless requested by instructor
  • [If requested] Student consultant reviews video based on instructor goals.
  • [If requested] Student consultant creates a report for the instructor.
  • [If requested] Student Consultant and instructor meet to discuss observations and brainstorm changes to course as needed.
