The platform that I will be analyzing is Vimeo. The digital work that I have chosen to analyze Vimeo with is a video about how the sounds for the film, “Godzilla” (2014), was made. Vimeo is a site very similar to the common social media platform like instagram or Facebook, except its main focus is videos. Since its focus is put more on the video side, it is the most similar to YouTube! A post on Vimeo will typically consist of a video ranging from five minutes to even an hour and below the video will be authors and viewers interacting with each other.
Vimeo has a monetization program for its users. if the content that someone makes on Vimeo gains a lot of traction, the creator can go for this monetization program. When a creator gets monetized, their content on Vimeo now receives ads. Those ads will pay Vimeo first and then Vimeo will divide up a sum for the creator in which what ever post had the monetized ad. It is the exact same system as YouTube, but there is one difference that I found very unique to this site. YouTube will put ads on any video and if the content creator for those videos is not a part of their creator program, YouTube will take a majority of the monetized money. If a Vimeo content creator is not a part of Vimeo’s monetization program, there will be no ads on posts by that content creator.
Author recognition is a sticky subject on Vimeo. The content put on Vimeo is always labeled as one person or “online entity” but the content itself can be produced by a number of people. For example, the Vimeo post “SoundWorks Collection – The Sound of Godzilla” is a collaborative effort video but was published onto Vimeo by one person. Since the video itself was a collaborative effort, the publisher of the post added credentials in the description of the post, allowing those involved in the making of the video to succeed in their business. For the “SoundWorks Collection – The Sound of Godzilla” Vimeo post example, the author or publisher of the post had to be a part of the team who constructed the video and be a part of that teams publishing crew to get their content out to Vimeo.
When I made the rest of my first pice on WordPress, I saw no way for readers to interact with me. I do believe I need to make the option available through the designing process of my first piece but I do not know if I want to do that. As for collaboration with other authors, it is the same case for my first piece as with readers. I was allowed many different styled templates and enjoyed the amount of uniqueness with each one. Most of the templates are for design purposes more than practicality and navigation of the site. My first piece has yet to have the functions of a search engine optimization, and I believe that it would neither increase or decrease discoverability of a publication on WordPress.
