Walters began her career when television executives viewed female reporters covering about war, politics and other important matters would not be taken seriously by viewers<a href=\"#1.MacAskill\"><sup>[1]<\/sup>.<\/a>\u00a0Her success is credited with creating career opportunities for future female network anchors, including<strong> Jane Pauley<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0Katie Couric<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0Diane Sawyer<\/strong>. Walters often got her interviewees to speak about their perspectives and share information about their personal lives.<sup><a href=\"#2.Stanley\">[2]<\/a><a href=\"#1.MacAskill\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Through out her career Walters have earned many awards such as being inducted into the\u00a0<strong>Television Hall of Fame<\/strong>\u00a0in 1989,  a Lifetime Achievement Award from the\u00a0<strong>NATAS<\/strong>\u00a0(National Academy of Television, Arts and Sciences) in 2000, and a star on the\u00a0Hollywood Walk of Fame\u00a0in 2007.<sup><a href=\"#41.&quot;Photo\">[41]<\/a><\/sup> This blog post is an adaptation of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barbara_Walters\">Wikipedia&#8217;s article on Barbara Walters<\/a>. It highlights her impact in the broadcasting community and how she became an inspiration for female news anchors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Childhood Surrounded by Showbusiness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Barbara Jill Walters was born in&nbsp;Boston&nbsp;on September 25, 1929.<sup><a href=\"#3.O'Connor\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> <sup><a href=\"#1.MacAskill\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;She was the daughter of<strong> Dena (n\u00e9e Seletsky)<\/strong> and&nbsp;<strong>Lou Walters&nbsp;(born Louis Abraham Warmwater)<\/strong>;<sup><a href=\"#4.Walters\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> <sup><a href=\"#5.Stated\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> her parents were children of Russian Jewish immigrants.<sup><a href=\"#6.Quinn\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> <sup><a href=\"#7.Walters\">[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Walters&#8217; childhood her father managed the Latin Quarter nightclub in Boston, which was owned in partnership with E.\u00a0M. Loew. In 1942, her father opened the club&#8217;s\u00a0now-famous New York location. He was also  a\u00a0Broadway\u00a0producer for the\u00a0<em>Ziegfeld Follies\u00a0of 1943<\/em>,<sup><a href=\"#8.&quot;Lou&quot;\">[8]<\/a><\/sup> <sup><a href=\"#9.Lou\">[9]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0 and the entertainment director for the\u00a0Tropicana Resort and Casino\u00a0in\u00a0Las Vegas. Her father imported the\u00a0<em>Folies Berg\u00e8re<\/em>\u00a0stage show from Paris to the resort&#8217;s main showroom.<sup><a href=\"#10.Tropicana\">[10]<\/a><\/sup> According to Walters, her father made and lost several fortunes throughout his life in show business. He was a booking agent, and (unlike her uncles in the shoe and dress businesses) his job was not very stable. During the good times she recalled her father taking her to the rehearsals of the nightclub shows he directed and produced. In 1953 she produced a 15-minute children&#8217;s program,&nbsp;<em>Ask the Camera<\/em>, which was directed by&nbsp;<strong>Roone Arledge<\/strong>. She also started producing for TV host&nbsp;<strong>Igor Cassini&nbsp;(Cholly Knickerbocker)<\/strong>, but left the network shorty after. In her autobiography, Walters described this era&nbsp;as a time when it was believed that nobody would take a woman seriously reporting &#8220;hard news&#8221;, since it was before the Women&#8217;s Movement. Within a year, she had become a reporter-at-large developing, writing, and editing her own reports and interviews.<sup><a href=\"#24.&quot;Barbara\">[24]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;One very well-received film segment was &#8220;A Day in the Life of a Nun.&#8221; Another was about the daily life of a&nbsp;Playboy Bunny.<sup><a href=\"#25.&quot;Intrepid\">[25]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning in 1971, Walters hosted her own local NBC affiliate show,&nbsp;<em>Not for Women Only,<\/em>&nbsp;which ran in the mornings after&nbsp;<em>The Today Show.<\/em><sup><a href=\"#26.Thompson\">[26]<\/a><\/sup> <sup><a href=\"#27.Audition\">[27]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Walters had a great relationship with host&nbsp;<strong>Hugh Downs<\/strong>&nbsp;for years.&nbsp;In 1974,  NBC officially designated Walters as the program&#8217;s first female co-host,<sup><a href=\"#28.&quot;Farewell\">[28]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;becoming the first female co-host of a U.S. news program.<sup><a href=\"#29.&quot;Barbara\">[29]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ABC Evening News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Walters signed a five-year, $5&nbsp;million contract with&nbsp;<strong>ABC<\/strong>, receiving the nickname &#8220;Million Dollar Baby&#8221; and establishing her as the highest-paid news anchor, either male or female.<sup><a href=\"#2.Stanley\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> She and&nbsp;<strong>Harry Reasoner<\/strong>&nbsp;co-anchored the&nbsp;<em><strong>ABC Evening News<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;from 1976 to 1978, making her the first U.S. female network news anchor. <sup><a href=\"#29.&quot;Barbara\">[29] <\/a><\/sup>Reasoner had a difficult relationship with Walters because he disliked having a co-anchor, even though he worked with former CBS colleague&nbsp;<strong>Howard K. Smith&nbsp;<\/strong>nightly on ABC for several years. Walters said that the tension between the two was because Reasoner did not want to work with a co-anchor and also because he was unhappy at ABC.<sup><a href=\"#30.&quot;Barbara\">[30]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In 1981, five years after the start of their short-lived ABC partnership and well after Reasoner returned to CBS News, Walters and her former co-anchor had a memorable (and cordial)&nbsp;<em>20\/20<\/em>&nbsp;interview on the occasion of Reasoner&#8217;s new book release.<sup><a href=\"#31.&quot;Barbara\">[31]<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1979, Walters reunited with former&nbsp;<em>The Today Show<\/em>&nbsp;host Downs as a correspondent on the ABC newsmagazine<strong>&nbsp;<em>20\/20<\/em><\/strong>. Walters described it as &#8220;a talk show featuring four or five women &#8216;of different backgrounds, generations, and opinions,&#8217; who would discuss the topics of the day, mixing humor with intelligent debate.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"#33.Andrews\">[33]<\/a><\/sup>On&nbsp;<em>The View<\/em>, she won&nbsp;<strong>Daytime Emmy Awards&nbsp;<\/strong>for Best Talk Show in 2003 and Best Talk Show Host (with longtime host&nbsp;<strong>Joy Behar,<\/strong> moderator<strong>&nbsp;Whoopi Goldberg<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Elisabeth Hasselbeck<\/strong>, and<strong>&nbsp;Sherri Shepherd)<\/strong> in 2009.<sup><a href=\"#34.Hipes\">[34]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interviews <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Walters was known for &#8220;personality journalism&#8221;<sup><a href=\"#35.&quot;Barbara\">[35]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;and her &#8220;scoop&#8221; interviews.<sup><a href=\"#36.Madarang\">[36]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In 1976, she first aired her highly-rated, occasional, primetime&nbsp;<em>Barbara Walters Specials<\/em>&nbsp;interview program. Her first guests included a joint appearance by President-elect <strong>Jimmy Carter<\/strong> and<strong>&nbsp;Rosalynn Carter<\/strong>, and a separate interview with singer-actress&nbsp;<strong>Barbra Streisand<\/strong>.<sup><a href=\"#37.&quot;Barbara\">[37]<\/a><\/sup> Walters had sit-down interviews with world leaders and many influential people in pop culture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walters was widely known for asking actress <strong>Katharine Hepburn<\/strong>, &#8220;If you were a tree, what kind would you be?&#8221; On the last&nbsp;<em>20\/20<\/em>&nbsp;television episode in which she appears. Walters showed a video of  Hepburn&#8217;s interview, showing the actress saying, she felt like a strong tree in her old age. Walters followed up with the question, &#8220;What kind of a tree?&#8221;, and Hepburn responded &#8220;an oak&#8221; because they do not get&nbsp;Dutch elm disease.<sup><a href=\"#38.Littleton\">[38]<\/a><\/sup> According to Walters for years Hepburn refused her requests for an interview. When Hepburn finally agreed to one she said she wanted to meet Walters first. Walters walked in all smiles and ready to please. They had several other meetings later, mostly in Hepburn&#8217;s living room where she would give Walters her opinions. These included that careers and marriage did not mix, as well as her feeling that combining children with careers was out of the question.
