{"id":630,"date":"2024-01-07T12:48:19","date_gmt":"2024-01-07T12:48:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unewhavendh.org\/openlab-help\/?p=630"},"modified":"2024-01-07T12:52:51","modified_gmt":"2024-01-07T12:52:51","slug":"building-blocks-posts-pages-widgets-and-plugins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unewhavendh.org\/openlab-help\/building-blocks-posts-pages-widgets-and-plugins\/","title":{"rendered":"Building blocks: posts, pages, widgets, and plugins"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The four basic \u201cbuilding blocks\u201d for your site are the following:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unewhavendh.org\/openlab-help\/create-a-post\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"240\">posts<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unewhavendh.org\/openlab-help\/create-pages-on-your-site\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"370\">pages<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unewhavendh.org\/openlab-help\/add-widgets-to-your-site\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"378\">widgets<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unewhavendh.org\/openlab-help\/activate-plugins-on-your-site\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"386\">plugins<\/a>. &nbsp;To add content to your site, you can use posts or pages. &nbsp;To add functions to your site, you can use widgets and plugins. &nbsp;In this section, you will find brief explanations of these building blocks as well as helpful tips for how to best use them on your site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.\u00a0<strong>What is a post?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0When you want to write content for your site, you have the option of creating both posts and pages. \u00a0Posts will be appear on the \u201cHome\u201d page of your site in chronological order, with the newest post appearing at the top of the page.\u00a0 By default, your most recent posts are the first thing that a viewer will see when visiting your site. \u00a0They are a good place to post new information or announcements about your course, project, or portfolio. \u00a0They are also a good place to publish new discussion questions, reading responses, blog entries\u2014or any information that will be less relevant to your viewers as your course, project, or portfolio progresses. \u00a0Remember that posts are displayed chronologically, so any content posted will be pushed down the screen by new content. \u00a0If you would like certain content to remain static so that your viewers will always see it when they visit your site, then you might want to create that content as a Page (e.g., a course syllabus or project description).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.&nbsp;<strong>What is a page?<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unewhavendh.org\/openlab-help\/create-pages-on-your-site\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"370\">Pages<\/a>&nbsp;can have the same content as posts, but they are not published chronologically and the content on a page remains static (i.e., it doesn\u2019t change). &nbsp;Your posts will appear chronologically on your \u201cHome\u201d page and your pages will appear as links on your \u201cHome\u201d page. &nbsp;These links will usually appear in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unewhavendh.org\/openlab-help\/change-the-menu-on-your-site\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"360\">main navigation menu<\/a>&nbsp;on your site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3.&nbsp;<strong>What is a widget?<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;A widget is a tool that adds different functions to your site. &nbsp;To view widgets currently available for your site, go to your site Dashboard and click&nbsp;<strong>Appearance &gt; Widgets<\/strong>&nbsp;in the left-hand menu. &nbsp;To add a widget to your site, drag-and-drop the selected widget from the \u201cAvailable Widget\u201d area in the center of the screen to one of the \u201cWidget Areas\u201d in the right-hand menu.&nbsp; Learn more about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unewhavendh.org\/openlab-help\/add-widgets-to-your-site\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"378\">adding widgets to your site<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4.\u00a0<strong>What is a plugin?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0A plugin is another tool that adds custom features and functions to your site (e.g., integrating Twitter feeds on your site). \u00a0To view the available plugins for your site, go to your site Dashboard and click\u00a0<strong>Plugin<\/strong>\u00a0on the left-hand menu. \u00a0To use an available plugin, click\u00a0<strong>Activate<\/strong>\u00a0from underneath your selected plugin. \u00a0Activated plugins will usually appear at the bottom of the left-hand menu or as an item in the Settings section of the left-hand menu. \u00a0To edit the settings of an activated plugin, click the appropriate plugin title.
