The following is a radio show layout of a Texas Tribute show. The following flyers display the commentary of the radio host’s song selection whose focus is to represent a variety of subcultures from the great state of Texas.
When people ask, what classes are you taking this year, they are always intrigued by the class “Music of Texas”. They then tend to make remarks regarding cowboys and country music, which reminds me of the class in the beginning of the year where we highlighted words that reminded us of Texas. In retrospect, I bet many of us have a new appreciation for the variety and diversity of cultures in Texas, which has been represented in music throughout this semester. Additionally, I bet many more words would have been put on the wall of ‘Texas’ with what we know now.
Within my project, I wanted to represent a few of the subcultures that tend to not be associated with Texas, initially. The Tejano people and people of color are of course a large subgroup within Texas but tend to not come to mind when someone says Texas.
Music is a universal language, therefore using music to teach any subject will enable all involved to feel immersed in the subject and want to learn more. Although the class is called music of Texas, as a class, we were immersed in the culture and history behind the music.
