This film was released in 2011 and was a hit when it premiered. This film is a great example for Immigration and how it is truly a sensitive and important topic in society today. This movie hit my heart and it made me realize that so many people come to this country to be successful and live a better life/give a better life to their kids and we do not see it. This film made me feel so many emotions, but one in specific was sadness because I saw how this father and son got separated and how heartbreaking that moment was.

My Experience

This film was truly heart-breaking and it made my eyes watery because it is something that people can relate to in present day and we are not seeing it or taking as much importance to this social issue. The son of the main character (Luis Galindo) was a 15-teen year old boy who lived with his dad (Carlos Galindo) in East, Los Angeles. The son and the dad had a rough connection at the beginning of the film because the son did not notice or realize that his dad was doing everything to give him a better life, stability and economic success. The dad was a landscaper and he wanted to start his own landscaping company so his son could have a better life and everything started to go well, the dad bought his work truck, got tools and equipment to start his business and than they stole his truck with equipment. This all lead to me experiencing something that I could not imagine I could last if I was in their shoes and it broke me knowing that the dad at any moment could be taken away knowing how things were heated with immigration officers in that setting.

Classifying my Experience

I think the thing I felt was togetherness, which our glossary of experiences defines as “A feeling of being united in understanding with other people.” This film made me experience this because my family decided to spend time together watching movies and my dad said he had a good suggestion, so he played the movie and we were all hoping for a cheerful and exciting movie but when it started to reach the climax, all of us were tearing and we felt this feeling of unity; we felt the need to do something to show that we were united with those going through these issues and that they weren’t alone. I felt like I had to do something that moment to assure those going through these hard times of deportation that it would get better and that I supported their idea of coming to America for a better life. Another feeling I would say I felt at that moment would be connection, which is “Feeling linked or bonded to others in community.” I would say I felt this to because I needed to do something that same day or the next day to show my latino community that no matter what, I was there to support them and that they are not bad persons for coming to a foreign country for a better life for themselves or their own kids; everyone is allowed to go anywhere they want without having a risk of getting kicked out just because they do not have the correct documentation yet do so much for the country they are in and sacrifice so much for others.

Describing the Features Prompting my Experience

There were a few features that made me feel those two experiences throughout the movie. The main feature was the plot of the movie. I know I have mentioned the plot of the movie in the previous paragraphs but its because the way the plot was constructed was to hit the viewers with a hard and sentimental plot to make sure the mark stays and people always remember and reflect how others are having a hard time with social issues like deportation. The plot hits when the son and dad finally start to bond together and unite as one based on common grounds and the dad showing his son why he did what he did by migrating to American for a better life for him.

The plot was devastating and made sure the message was sent but the part that touched me the most was how in the end, the theme of the movie was shown and that was “A reason to live”. The part where I felt the connection was when the last part where the theme was presented and the melody being played while the dad saying his last words to his son before he is taken to be deported.

This clip is where the climax occurs and the father is pulled over after stealing the pickup truck that was stolen from him and the officers asks for his license, registration and proof of insurance, but he does not have a license and he is arrested and transferred to ICE and processed. This part made me feel sentimental and sad because there is people daily who get treated badly or go through rough times and get more bad luck. Also, the language barrier was another issue that made me feel togetherness because whenever I see someone struggling with Spanish-English conversations, I help others because I do not want people to be taken advantage of if they do not understand English or commit a mistake of saying something that they didn’t mean.

Overall, all these feature worked together to get the message through and made me reflect that I was doing some things wrong and taking things for granted when others wished or desired to have the opportunities I have; So, I should take advantage of the opportunities to make my family proud and to help others who are in my shoes or who want the same goals to be accomplished like me but are in different situations, I want to help them reach their goals and assure them that they are not alone and that united we are stronger and there is no such thing as borders or imaginary lines.

Determining the Narrative Technologies Prompting My Experience

The narrative technology I found to have hit the spot to shape my experience would be “Moral Suasion” which according to our glossary of technologies is “An appeal to morality in order to influence or change behavior.” I would say this is what shaped my experience because it helped me understand and fix the way I acted towards people and how not everyone has an easy life. Also, not just immigration but other issues people have, this film hit the spot and presented the message for me to capture that not everyone gets what they want and everyone works hard for the stuff they have, so it is always better to value and appreciate it than to lose it and take it for granted. The message at the end was to value and cherish the time with your family members and to be understanding that those people who are deemed “criminals” because they do not have the proper documentation to live in America are not criminals and they are just here to live a better life and give their sons and daughters more opportunities from this country so they can grow and succeed and not have a hard time like their parents.

Extras

Everyone Just Wants A Better Future For Their Sons and Daughters The creative art I choose for my first assignment is “A Better Life“, the film.
