Beginning
First and foremost, this class was an insane introduction to the world of editing and publishing. It showed me that there is so much more to it than I originally thought. It is not simply a matter of checking someone’s work and giving it a stamp of approval or a stamp of rejection, but discovering motivations for works that have been published, and finding the overarching “why” of the stories that are being shared.
Resources
I discovered two new resources today from Professor Isbell, the first being University of New Haven’s library database, which allows me to type in key words and the computer to search and find articles that have to do with the key words.
The second new resource was the ability to borrow an article that is needed but is stuck behind a paywall. As a broke college student, I hate the idea of having to spend money on a monthly subscription just to use it one time for an article that may have been make-or-break for an assignment. This obliterates that obstacle and I will definitely be using it for opportunities even outside of this class.
Conclusion
This seems like it’s going to be an interesting semester, but I’ll at the very least have some more experience, since part of being a journalist is the editing and publishing. That’s why I chose this course, and I don’t think this class will disappoint. It was a 3-hour course (almost) but I was entertained by it the entire way through.
Looks promising!
