This area of work includes photovoice projects and community listening sessions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Local Community Organization Evaluations<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Grants and contracts focused on supporting different community organizations with developing and implementing evaluation plans for several initiatives, including Full Service Community Schools.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Domestic Violence Hotline Studies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Macias led the development of a focus survey as a collaboration between The Hotline and Esperanza United. To date, a graduate thesis and an undergraduate thesis project have been completed using this data. The team continues to disseminate findings and is supporting analysis and dissemination of a second survey in collaboration with another national training and technical service provider.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Research to Public Policy Advocacy<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies focused on informing local and state-level legislative committees focused on improving behavioral healthcare. Some of this work is done in collaboration with the Tow Youth Justice Institute. For example, Dr. Whitson is evaluating school-based care coordination to support resource allocation to this type of service.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) and Protective Factors<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Whitson has conducted multiple studies on children with trauma and their families. ACEs incorporate traumatic events as well as contextual risk factors in childhood for long-term negative effects. This area of study is focused on identifying protective factors for children and adults who have high numbers of ACEs so that intervention programs can focus on those protective factors as a way to buffer the impact of ACEs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Past Projects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Photovoice \u2013 A Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Esperanza United supported Students for Educational Justice, a New Haven-based youth-led organization, on a photovoice project. This project utilized visual research methods (photography), by training students to use the cameras to document, reflect upon, and communicate issues of concern to influence social change.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Restorative Justice and Gender-based Violence<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The project focused on implementing restorative practices to better understand the impacts of gender-based violence on survivors. The project specifically focused on how these practices can be used in marginalized communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CT Latinx Behavioral Health &amp;&nbsp; UC Irvine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A needs assessment for the Latinx community on gender-based violence in light of COVID-19.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Children\u2019s National Hospital<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Program evaluation of the Children&#8217;s National Hospital&#8217;s trauma-informed family violence program. The services delivered to abused parents and children are being evaluated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Data Analysis \u2013 Programs in New Haven Public Schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Whitson has been working on program evaluations in New Haven Public Schools and will be analyzing a large data set related to substance use programs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Intimate partner homicide prevention<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Project funded by the Office of Violence Against Women.
