Humans and Machines

Courses

  • Lots of possibilities for writing courses in partnership with graduate students studying natural language processing in the realm of machine learning (For example, in the “The Art of the Review,” students will be asked to consider what makes their reviews distinct and superior to those that can be produced by recommendation and text generation algorithms, Isbell)
  • How We Read (a new version of Digital Editing that is more of a history of the book course and could be adjusted to fit into many tracks…perhaps a 2-semester sequence, the first delving into early technologies for reproducing text and the second focusing on the 19th-21st centuries. The first half could partner with the makerspace to print a book, the second could use the “text encoding lab” (essentially a computer classroom equipped with Oxygen) to create digital editions. (Wranovix and Isbell)
  • Renaissance and Reformation using a Reacting to the Past game based on the construction of Brunelleschi’s Dome and/or the Trial of Galileo (Wranovix)
  • A course built around the RTTP game Rage Against the Machine (Wranovix)
