Algorithms & the Arts with D. Edward Davis (Fall 2023)

In just a few short years, artificial intelligence has permanently altered the potential of human creativity. Authors, musicians, and visual artists now harness the power of algorithms to develop previously-unimaginable works. Social media and streaming services analyze our behavior and use “recommendation algorithms” to keep us scrolling, watching, and listening. This course will provide an opportunity to analyze these recent changes in the arts and media — and to predict what the future of this technology has in store. Students will gain hands-on experience using artificial intelligence to generate creative work in a variety of formats and will engage in discussions and reflections to consider the ethical impacts of algorithms on our lives. (No previous creative experience is necessary.)
