(Above): Morgan Wallen announces new song “Love Somebody” release date during Night 1 at Neyland Stadium on Sept. 20th, 2024
I remember (pre-college) that whenever someone asked me what I would listen to, I would tell them, and I quote “Anything but country.” I had always thought that those who listened to country music simply enjoyed listening to dudes in cowboy hats and boots talking about beer, driving their pickup trucks, and working on a farm. I just wasn’t a fan, and I thought that I would NEVER catch myself enjoying country music and the stories that they tell throughout the songs. There are songs about love, songs about alcohol, songs about childhood, and so much more.
I was scrolling through Instagram, and this influencer that I followed due to how positive and passionate he was about music and athleticism shows up on my recommended watches. In this specific video, he talks about a Morgan Wallen song and how he “had done it once again.” I then hear possibly one of the best songs I’ve ever heard, titled “Love Somebody” by Wallen. The influencer who had recommended the song sang very passionately and had me not only listening to the song but also feeling the song.
I heard the song and was immediately hooked, because in this song Wallen talks about how he’s looking for love, and he’s done with his crazy nights and just wants to settle down with someone who isn’t going to leave a hole in his heart. The lyrics were easy to remember and catchy but were pleasant to my ears. You can hear the passion in the slight rasp of Wallen’s voice, and that made me want to listen to the full song for myself.
The search began for the song, and I, unfortunately, found out that this song was leaked and not fully released as of summer 2024. Therefore, I had to wait, and the song eventually faded from my mind. However, I discovered that I accidentally subscribed to Morgan Wallen on YouTube, where most of my search for the full song occurred. On October 18th, the full song was released. It showed up on my recommended YouTube videos, and I immediately remembered the song and just how catchy it was.
The first thing I did to listen to was borrow my roommate’s giant speaker, where I blasted the song while cleaning my kitchen. I remembered the lyrics, and I truly felt the song in my soul, as I was in the process of feeling the same way Wallen was feeling about his life. After going through a pretty significant breakup, this song truly started to help me learn to heal.
So now onto the analysis of the actual song. It starts with a nice guitar and drum section, which is catchy, it’s something that I occasionally find myself humming as I’m walking to class or having a lift at the gym. He starts the song by talking about how people “can’t keep my name out their mouth,” and that there are “rumors goin’ all over town, I live too fast to settle down.” He’s singing about how people say that he’s the type that doesn’t want a relationship, but someone who just likes to sleep around.
It appears that Wallen is discussing that he sleeps around to make up for the hole in his heart, perhaps from an earlier heartbreak. In the chorus, he says, “I just wanna love somebody, who won’t leave a hole in my heart” and “I just wanna love somebody that don’t want me falling apart.” This shows us as the audience that he sleeps around because he’s trying to find that special someone who can fill the void in his heart that has remained there since the last relationship.
It’s very wholesome the intentions that Wallen expresses. He wants to go above and beyond for that special someone, you can see it when he expresses that he needs someone ” that I’d be proud to take on back to my hometown, with honest eyes that just ain’t gonna lead.” He shares that he has had his fair share of “crazy nights” but is tired of them, and will consider himself lucky if he finds something more than that.
I truly feel for anyone who hasn’t experienced listening to a song with their hearts instead of their ears. It’s something that I feel every person needs to experience; just the feeling of blasting a song you enjoyed so loud it goes right through your body without a care in the world about what your voice sounds like to others, or if others enjoy the music you listen to or not. Hopefully, you all have or will experience a song that makes you feel that everything is going to be okay and that others are fighting your battles.
