If i’m going to be honest I had an entirely different plan for this assignment, and it wasn’t until last night, after watching this film, where I knew I could write my project on this film. Im normally not the type to sit by myself and decide I want to watch even a show so forget a movie. But for some reason last night I had the urge and i’m glad I did. Typically when I get this urge it take some numerous amounts of minutes to try and find something. It always gets to the point of me wanting to throw my remote at the screen cause theres nothing to watch. However this one was easy and something told me to watch it.
How did Mr Crocket find me?
Like I mentioned before I was in bed when I had the urge to watch a movie. My week days are busy and most days I go straight to bed, but this night I wanted to relax a little before hand. With that, I didn’t have many options for streaming devices on my TV in my room. Netflix always kicks me out, and i’m not paying for anything else when I have TikTok. Anyways I have my roommates HULU. There is a section that has “Top Movies” and this one was number one. My logic here was if it was number one, it had to be good. I also LOVE horror movies. So when I saw the genre, I got excited as Ive seen most horror movies.
Going through Hulu sometimes scares me as its not my account, and because of that what is recommended might not be a recommendation for me. Even though my roommate and I are very similar, I still get worried I wont be able to find something that I will enjoy.
This was the cover photo that popped up on the screen in front of me. Between this and the description of the movie, I was immediately hooked.
My Emotions While Watching Mr. Crocket
Confusion:
I feel like with most horror movies the beginning is always confusing. The opening scene is really hooking and we start to meet Mr Crocket. In this scene there is this little boy who is eating dinner at the table with his family. Moments before he got up to eat he was watching a TV show, something that looked similar to Barney. The little boy doesn’t want to continue eating his dinner, where this frustrates the little boys step father. It is clear the step father can be abusive verbally and possibly physically too, where he proceeds to yell at the boy, and try and force feed him his food. As this is happening we are getting glimpses of the TV screen the boy was just watching, where we see this man that seems as though he can see what is going on in the room. This is when my confusion kicks in as Im trying to figure out if he actually CAN see inside the house. The step father continues to get loud and the man on the screen does not seem happy. Now this is really where I start to get confused because the man on the screen is no longer on the screen, and you can see his eyes where you would insert the VHS tape. (Creepy I know) Then the man proceeds to climb out of the opening (even creepier I KNOW) The lights start flickering and suddenly the man is walking in the house with a smile on his face laughing. No, chuckling. Now I just want to know whats going on because the step father is just confused as I am, but this little boy knows exactly who this man is. Mr. Crocket came into this house with a plan and we start to see why he is there, and we really figure it out when the step father gets murdered by Mr Crocket.
Scared
This is a scary movie so I think being scared is understandable. However I wasn’t scared at the movie itself, I think I was more scared of what was going to happen next. This movie had a lot of gore in it, which doesn’t makes me scared rather grossed out. There is this specific song that would play for Mr, Crockets shows, and anytime you heard that song playing in the background, you knew he was coming.
This is known as his theme song. With that, anytime I heard this song that feeling of fear kicked in as I knew something was about to happen. Being in Mr, Crockets world there were a lot of unexpected things that would happen, and I think the fear of the unexpected is where that scared feeling came from.
Shock
We learn very quickly that Mr, Crocket isn’t actually the good guy we think he is. He will go into these families homes and take care of the parents who are mean to their children. So where do the kids go? Good question! Mr. Crocket is able to use his magic marker to draw a portal that leads to his personal hell. He takes the kids for a better life, but he has a dark past where he was murdered by police. There is this scene where he is reading the kids this story, and the story happens to be about Mr. Crockets past life. We learn that before he was killed he met this boy named Anthony, and him and Mr. Crocket became very close. Mr. Crocket wasn’t very fond of his parents, so he decided to take the boy. His intentions were good and he didn’t want to hurt the boy, but he still committed a crime of kidnapping a child. When the police arrived at the house Mr. Crocket started attacking the police, and was shot on scene by another officer (see above)
In order to keep his soul alive, and continue to help these children with their parents, he made it so he could have his show forever by selling his soul. The kids would never see the reality of where they actually where being taken, as all they see is the show through Mr. Crockets powers.
This is Major and he is a main character throughout this movie. We learn his story in the beginning where his father has just passed, and he tends to have some behavioral issues. One day there was this “library” that showed up outside of their house, and inside was Mr. Crockets World. Majors mom decided to bring it inside and hoped it will help calm Major down. Little did she know she would be welcoming another being into her home. Major gets taken by Mr. Crockets when majors mom said she “was done being his mother” out of rage. So Mr. Crocket took him so she didn’t have to be his mother anymore. That was enough for her and she went on to find her son. (this is relevant I promise)
Right after he was taken, and Summer was trying to find her son, this happens. My shock was even higher after this and she meets someone upon leaving after this happens. On her way out she meets this man who asks for her attention. He claims he knows what summer is researching and looking for as his daughter also got taken. What Summer doesn’t know is the man she is talking with is using her to his advantage. We get to a point in the movie where Summer and this man are now in Mr. Crockets world by going though one of the portals when Mr. Crocket didn’t see. We think the man is trying to help Summer as she is stuck in a chair, when the opportunity to hurt Mr. Crocket occurs, we learn this man is actually Anthony and he used Summer so he could see Mr. Crocket again.
Future Implementations
When trying to find this movie, I personally didn’t have any trouble. However, I wasn’t looking for a specific movie, rather just a movie to watch in general. With that, this was the first time I was seeing anything abut this movie. Especially during Halloween when this movie came out, I feel as though there would have been more promotion for new horror movies. It was honestly surprising that I hadn’t heard about it but I think there are more way to get people to see this movie even if its not apart of your regular algorithm. In general I think there needs to me more promotion for new films. The only time we see anything is when they are getting put out in theaters as they are trying to get people to go. I don’t see many advertisements for movies or new shows on streaming devices unless i’m on he stream itself. I think that if companies start to throw advertisment and trailers out there on all social media, it would get more people want to watch. Not only are you promoting the new film, you are promoting your company and persuading people to sign up to watch.
Another thing I think could help is if there are a separated sections within the horror. If you break it down more, there is a chance people can find something more specific to what they are looking for. For an example, Mr. Crocket is filled with gore, so labeling it as gore may help to attract to people who may be interested in movies like the Jigsaw ones. I think being specific would be more helpful as audiences know exactly what they are in the mood for.
